Data Visualization: Turning Data Sets into Discoveries

July 14, 2015

Scientific discoveries often start with simple ideas. But when those ideas give rise to more and more questions, how can we better visualize a solution and a path to discovery? Data visualization uses visual tools, literally sketches and drawings, to explore complex ideas and turn them into a linear narrative.

Giorgia Lupi the design director at Accurat, a data-driven research and design firm, illustrates how that process works through an infographic. The method is featured in National Geographic this month in the article, “Sketching with Data Opens the Mind’s Eye.” It’s part of NG’s continuing series called “Data Points.”
