Dr Andrew Desbois earned a PhD in marine microbiology at the University of St. Andrews. Since then, his studies have mainly focused on the discovery of new agents for treating infections caused by drug-resistant pathogens. Andrew’s previous work involved the isolation and identification of novel antimicrobial compounds from natural sources, including marine algae. Subsequently Andrew has been evaluating the efficacy of new anti-infective treatments containing combinations of natural products for treating diseases caused by various microbes, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In addition to a series of research papers, Andrew has also published topical review articles on antimicrobial fatty acids, marine-derived bioactive compounds, antifungal peptides and methods in anti-infective drug discovery and development.
