Our Physical Sciences Editors

Dr Laura Hamm, PhD

Dr Laura Hamm received her PhD in biogeochemistry from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where she was a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. Her dissertation covered the role of proteins and other biomolecules in calcium carbonate biomineralisation. She then worked as a postdoctoral fellow in geochemistry at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where she utilized molecular dynamics and spectroscopy to study solution structure and dynamics at mineral surfaces. Dr Hamm is a first and co-author on a number of scientific publications and book chapters in a variety of fields including chemistry, materials science, geobiology and geoscience. Prior to completing her doctorate, she worked as a research associate in organic chemistry, environmental chemistry and inorganic chemistry. Dr Hamm currently works as a freelance scientific analyst and editor, helping scientists in academia and industry make sense of large data sets and effectively communicate their results.

Dr Lois Bradnam, PhD

Dr Lois Bradnam obtained her first-class honours degree in chemistry with medicinal chemistry from the University of Southampton in the UK and went on to obtain her Ph.D. in chemical biology from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. During her Ph.D., Lois published papers on micro- and nano-scale drug delivery approaches in vitro and in vivo, as well as gene silencing in stem cells. Lois went on to join the Royal Society of Chemistry as a Publishing Editor, where she worked on several top-tier journals, before taking the role of Senior Production Controller for Books, overseeing the entire publication process. She also holds a diploma in herbal medicine from the College of Naturopathic Medicine.

Her areas of expertise include medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, in vitro and in vivo pharmaceutical studies, flow cytometry, microscopy, clinical studies, alternative medicine, and herbal medicine, including traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda. Lois is a professional member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading and a member of the European Association of Science Editors.

Dr Yalda Javadi, PhD

Yalda Dr Yalda Javadi obtained her PhD from the University of Sussex, UK, in the  Department of Chemistry, conducting research specifically in protein biophysics.  Her first postdoctoral post was at Columbia University, New York, USA, where she  used single molecule force spectroscopy to study the aetiology of certain  neurodegenerative diseases. She is currently serving her second postdoctoral  position at the University of Cambridge, UK, where she specialises in engineering protein based nanomaterials. During her 8 years of research experience, she has published a number of peer-reviewed manuscripts in leading scientific journals. Her areas of expertise include biophysics, nanomaterials, biotechnology, nanotechnology and protein chemistry. Alongside her research, Yalda works as a freelance scientific editor, and is founder and editor for Ionic Magazine: an online magazine that incorporates scientific discoveries with artistic interpretations.

Dr Arshad Makhdum, MSc, PhD

Dr Arshad Makhdum obtained an undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Greenwich. He went on to earn an MSc and PhD in clinical pharmacology from University College London (UCL). Postdoctoral studies in allergic disease took him to the position of Senior Research Fellow at UCL. He was then recruited to the Scripps Institute in San Diego (CA, USA), where he focused on exercise-induced asthma. He also taught physicians and surgeons the basic science underpinning allergic disease at this elite research centre. Dr Makhdum then returned to the UK and started a career in academic publishing, reaching the position of Publisher at Elsevier (Oxford, UK). Dr Makhdum has been a STM editor and medical writer for 15 years. He specializes in editing content from authors whose first language is not English. Dr Makhdum also has considerable expertise in what is required for an article to be accepted in a particular journal. His areas of specialization are internal medicine, surgery, anaesthesia, allergic disease (particularly asthma), clinical pharmacology, physiology and anatomy, molecular biology and chemistry.

Dr Shailesh Jain, PhD

Dr Shailesh Jain received his doctoral degree in Molecular Microbiology from the Ulster University, Northern Ireland. After pursuing postdoctoral research for a year at the University of Manchester, UK, Shailesh started his career in the publishing industry. He has published five academic research manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and has presented at several prestigious conferences. He currently works as a part-time freelance scientific editor, with a focus on editing manuscripts written by authors whose first language is not English. His areas of specialization include Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genomics, and Proteomics

Sarah Tomblin, MSc, MPhil

Sarah Tomblin is an experienced Life Science Editor with a demonstrated history of working in the medical publishing industry. Sarah obtained her first degree in Sport Science from Chichester University and went on to achieve an MSc (Distinction) from Cardiff University and an MPhil at Chichester, where she specialised in motor psychology, studying anticipation of the tennis service with implicit learning. Sarah’s core expertise lies in sport science and medical editing after working in the medical publishing industry for 18 years. Sarah now works as a freelance editor, specialising in drug delivery, cardiovascular and general medical editing, physiology, psychology and sport science.
